Puzzle #544 of NYT Connections: Sports Edition is live for March 21, 2026. Today’s board pulls from gymnastics, boxing, football, and hockey — a wide-ranging mix that makes sorting tricky. Read the hints first; the full answers are further down.
What Is NYT Connections: Sports Edition?
Connections: Sports Edition is a daily sports- puzzle published by The Athletic, the sports journalism outlet owned by The New York Times. It works exactly like the standard NYT Connections game, but every category is rooted in the world of sports.
The board presents 16 words. Your job is to sort them into four groups of four, where each group shares a hidden sports-related connection. The categories are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is the easiest, green is moderate, blue is harder, and purple is the most deceptive. You get four chances to guess before the game ends.
Unlike the main NYT Games app, Connections: Sports Edition lives in The Athletic’s own app — or you can play it for free on the web.
How to Play
- You are given 16 words and must find four groups of four that share a common theme.
- Select four words and tap “Submit” to check your guess.
- If you’re wrong, you lose one of your four attempts.
- Correctly solved groups are revealed in color order, from yellow (easiest) to purple (hardest).
Category Hints for March 21, #544
Use these vague clues to work out the groups before scrolling to the answers.
🟨 Yellow (Easiest): Think of what a legendary Olympic gymnast like Mary Lou Retton would compete on.
🟩 Green: Picture yourself ringside at a Muhammad Ali bout. What do you see and hear around the ring?
🟦 Blue: Taylor Swift’s fiancé plays this position in the NFL. His first name belongs here — along with three other famous tight ends.
🟪 Purple (Hardest): These four words are the first parts of NHL team names. Think franchises, not players.

Scroll no further if you still want to solve it yourself. Below are all four complete groups.
🟨 GYMNASTICS APPARATUSES Bars, Beam, Floor, Vault
🟩 AT THE BOXING RING Bell, Corner, Ropes, Turnbuckle
🟦 FIRST NAMES OF NFL TIGHT ENDS Brock, Dallas, Hunter, Travis
🟪 STARTS OF NHL TEAM NAMES Fly, Island, Oil, Rang
What Made Today’s Puzzle Tricky
The purple group was the sneakiest of the four. Fly, Island, Oil, and Rang are all the opening words of NHL team names — the Philadelphia Flyers, New York Islanders, Edmonton Oilers, and Colorado Avalanche (whose full name starts with “Colorado” but “Rang-ers York Rangers). These four fragments don’t scream “hockey” on their own, which is exactly what makes purple so satisfying when it clicks.
The blue group required some sports-celebrity knowledge. Travis (Kelce), Brock (Purdy — wait, he’s a QB, so this refers to tight end Brock Wright or another Brock), Dallas (Goedert), and Hunter (Henry) are all first names shared with notable NFL tight ends. If you don’t follow the NFL closely, these first names could scatter your thinking in many directions.
In the yellow group, Vault was the word most likely to pull players toward the purple or blue groups — it sounds financial, not gymnastic. And in the green group, Turnbuckle is an obscure enough boxing-ring term that many solvers might not immediately connect it to the squared circle.
Tips for Today
- Start with yellow. Bars, Beam, Floor, and Vault are all standard competitive gymnastics events — once you lock those in, the remaining 12 words get clearer.
- Use pop culture for blue. Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are everywhere in sports news. If you know Travis is a tight end, work outward from there to find Brock, Dallas, and Hunter.
- Sound out the purple words. Say “Fly-ers,” “Island-ers,” “Oil-ers,” and “Rang-ers” aloud. The NHL suffix “-ers” helps reveal these fragments quickly once you know to listen for it.
- Don’t let Ropes or Turnbuckle fool you. Both could belong to a sports category about something else, but together with Bell and Corner they paint a clear boxing ring picture. Trust the pattern.
