What Is NYT Pips?
NYT Pips is a domino-style puzzle game from the New York Times. Released in August 2025, it puts a fresh single-player spin on the classic domino experience.
Unlike traditional dominoes, Pips uses color-coded spaces with specific conditions that tiles must meet. If there is no color coding in an area, there are no conditions for that space.
How to Play NYT Pips
Tiles are placed vertically or horizontally and connect with each other, similar to dominoes. The touching tiles don’t have to match — instead, they must meet the color-coded conditions of the space they occupy.
Here are the main condition types you’ll encounter:
- Number: All pips in the space must add up to the given number.
- Equal: Every domino half in the space must show the same number of pips.
- Not Equal: Every domino half must have a completely different number of pips.
- Less Than: Every domino half must add up to less than the given number.
- Greater Than: Every domino half must add up to more than the given number.
